Lord Grantham, just now on Downton Abbey:
“I don’t want thumbscrews or the rack, but there always seems to be something Johnny foreigner about the Catholics.”
I saw that. I heard that the director is Catholic and this season was going to work in a storyline that recalled some of his experiences of anti-Catholic bigotry in England.
I was glad to hear it. My wife an I enjoy the show very much but I always thought it gave short shrift to religious issues. Anti-Catholicism has played too significant a part of England’s post-Reformation history to ignore it.
