In a rare and welcome stroke of clarity, the bishops conference has asked Catholics to fast and abstain from eating meat on all Fridays during the Year of Faith for the intention of Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. We’ve decided to take up the effort as a family, and I recently signed up for the USCCB’s weekly text reminder which arrives Thursday evenings (text FAST to 99000). So we were all prepared to go meatless and maybe a bit hungry today when last night’s text reminded us that we’re not to fast on Easter Friday. And while we certainly can pray — today’s texted intention is “for all grieving the loss of a child through abortion” — it’ll be bacon and eggs for breakfast.
